Keeping Kids Active

For many kids, cycling, playing football in the garden or other outdoor actvities have given way to watching television, playing video games and spending hours online. But it's never too late to get your child off the sofa. Use these simple tips to give your child a lifelong appreciation for activities that strengthen his or her body.

  • Children and adolescents age 6 and older need at least an hour a day of physical activity. Most of the hour should be either moderate or vigorous aerobic activity. In addition, children should participate in muscle-strengthening and bone-strengthening activities at least three days a week. Many classic activities — such as playing on playground equipment and skipping — cover all the bases at once.
  • Why not add a few fun new activities to your childs usual games? Inexpensive ideas like a Pedal Racer or Diablo Set both available from www.find-me-a-gift.co.uk could offer a chance for your child to learn new skills and keep active without even realising. Take a look at our Mums4mums review pages for reviews of these products and other outdoor games.
  • If you really can't wean your child off video games, opt for those that require movement. Activity-oriented video games — such as dance video games and video games that use a player's physical movements to control what happens on the screen will boost a child's calorie-burning power.

Most importantly be your child's role model, get up and get active yourself, who knows, you could have fun too!
